MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Most students at the University of Memphis will see an 11% tuition hike starting this fall. The Tennessee Board of Regents voted Friday to increase tuition and fees at all Regents-governed public universities and community colleges for the 2011-12 academic year.
This increase means that an in-state undergraduate student taking a full academic course load (12 hours) at the University of Memphis will pay $3,695 per semester in tuition. An in-state graduate student taking a full course load (10 hours) will pay $4,646 per semester. For an out-of-state full-time undergraduate student, the cost will be $11,051 per semester, and for an out-of-state full-time graduate student the cost will be $10,856 each semester.
In-state law students will see the same 11% increase, but the costs for out-of-state law students at the U of M will not be raised this year. An in-state full-time (11 hours) law student will pay $7,770 per semester, while a full-time out-of-state law student will pay $18,706 a semester.
State funding for the University of Memphis has been reduced by a total of almost $42 million, including an $8.5 million shortfall in the upcoming fiscal year, which equates to a 34% loss in state funding over the last four years.
“It is unfortunate that our students must continue to bear the responsibility for closing the gap between state funding of higher education and the actual costs of higher education,” said U of M President Dr. Shirley Raines.
