MEMPHIS, Tenn. – ‘Waiting for Superman’ drew attention to teachers unions. The real advantage of charter schools, the movie said was the ability to fire bad teachers, and reward great teachers because there are no union contract constraints. The charter school KIPP is featured as an example. The movie often portrayed unions as a barrier to rewarding good teachers and to getting rid of bad teachers. It says union contracts are a barrier to real reform. People not in education said the movie exposed problems they didn’t know existed.

“I don’t think people really realize what the problem really is until you see a movie like this one. What do you think the problem is? Oh, the problem is definitely the educators. Most definitely,” Janice Mitchell, Memphis.

But was this movie biased toward charter schools? Were teachers unions wrongly portrayed? Keith Williams thought so, he’s the president of the Memphis Education Association and joined FOX13 with his take on the documentary.
