Middletown, Conn. (WTNH) – A daycare and an elementary school in Middletown have been evacuated because of concerns over the roof.
Officials say the kids at Bielefield Elementary School have been moved to Wesley Elementary.
Just today, the Middletown Superintendent posted this message on the district’s web site:
In light of recent weather-related events, the Middletown Public Schools retained the services of Turner Construction to remove snow from district roofs. So far, the district has not discovered any structural issues. We have and will continue to monitor all building roofs. As always, student safety remains our primary concern.
Kids at Apple Tree Children Center on East Street were also evacuated after an employee noticed a crack in the wall. The 90 children were bused to a nearby fire house as firefighters checked the structural integrity of the building. ,
On Wednesday morning, a three story building on Main Street in Middletown came tumbling down from the weight of the snow.
Mayor Sebastian N. Giuliano says he has requested assistance from the National Guard to help clear snow from the roofs of the district’s 11 schools. So far the Guard has helped Vernon, Naugatuck and Tolland clear snow from the roofs of school buildings.
