AR Bible Courses Bill Passes House

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Courses on the Bible could be taught in Arkansas public high schools under a bill passed by the state House.
The bill by Rep. Denny Altes of Fort Smith passed 71-16 on Friday after Altes said it would have no effect on what the schools are doing now.
The bill wouldn’t require a course on the Bible be taught, but would put into law that it is allowed.
Education Commissioner Tom Kimbrell has said the measure would increase the chance of lawsuits. Altes said similar laws elsewhere have not landed in court.
The bill does not provide for other religious doctrine to be explored in the class.
The bill now goes to the state Senate for consideration.
