Students at this school can sign up for a course called “Lady Gaga and the Sociology of the Fame.”

Hey students: Want to “unravel some of the sociologically relevant dimensions of the fame of Lady Gaga”? Then the University of South Carolina has just the course for you!

Sociology professor Mathieu Deflem will teach the course next spring.  According to The New York Times, Deflem is an unabashed Gaga fan, having seen her in concert more than 25 times and collected about 300 of her albums. He even maintains a fan site called gagafrontrow.net.

But that doesn’t mean course sessions will be a time to crank up “Just Dance” and flit around the room. Far from it: Deflem plans to take a serious look at what it means to be famous – and the forces that lead to the achievement of such iconic status.

Intrigued? Here’s a look at the course description.
