S.B. Ekanayake S.B. – USAID Request for Proposals: Innovations in Education Data

Written on January 23, 2012 – 6:50 am | by Imogen Fahey

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), and World Vision (collectively referred to as the “Founding Partners”) are seeking game-changing innovations with the potential to dramatically improve reading skills and low literacy rates among primary grade children.

Through a multi-year initiative called (ACR), the Founding Partners will collaborate to achieve the goal of global action to improve child literacy.

While recognizing that there are many factors required to improve student learning outcomes in primary grade reading, the Founding Partners have established the All Children Reading Competition to focus on two needs that are both important and largely unmet in low- and lower- middle income countries: teaching and learning materials and education data.

The will support innovative approaches that draw on current research findings related to effective instruction in primary grade reading as well as technology, information, and communication advances that may lead to substantial impact on student learning outcomes at scale. In

MAPS board aims at budget

Written on January 20, 2012 – 12:07 am | by Christopher Tulloch

MARQUETTE — Monday night the Marquette Area Public School Board looked at two key issues.

The board addressed a new law requiring board member elections to be held on even numbered years as opposed to the current system where elections are held every November.

The board also heard a presentation of budget assumptions for the next fiscal year.

“At our February 13th board meeting we’ll hear from administration what our expected costs are if we do nothing for next year, tonight we learned what our revenues are and when we compare those two we’ll have a range of expected reductions that the district will need to make,” said MAPS Board President Scott Brogan.

After the board has a clearer picture of the budget, they expressed the need to have public input on the upcoming budget issues and discussed the possibility of holding a town hall meeting.

‘The Secret Garden’ Blooms at UVU’s Noorda Theatre

Written on January 19, 2012 – 7:41 am | by Matthew Hovell

The Utah Valley University Theatrical Arts Department brings “The Secret Garden: A Play for Young Audiences” to the UVU Noorda Theatre stage Jan. 26 -Feb. 18. Performances of this beloved piece of literature are presented every Monday, Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday matinees at 2 p.m.

This is a non-musical adaptation of “The Secret Garden,” which focuses on the child characters using pantomime, projections, puppets and even a live flute to help tell the tale. It incorporates a “story-theatre” style that includes narrative as well as dialogue and is performed in a “tennis court” performance area (with the audience on either side of the artists.)

“The Secret Garden” presents UVU theatrical arts students Heather Ashton in the role of Mary Lennnox and Jordan Kramer as Colin Craven. The production is directed by John Newman, a UVU assistant professor of theatrical arts.

This is the third season for which the Noorda Theatre has created high quality productions for younger audiences. Previous main stage

Anglish – English without all the borrowed words

Written on January 15, 2012 – 10:40 pm | by Imogen Fahey

The English language has historically borrowed words heavily from other tongues (known as loanwords), and is part of the reason why we have such a rich vocabulary compared with every other language on the planet. England had cultural contact with many other races and tribes throughout its history for example the Roman, Viking and Norman invasions brought Latin, Norse and French to Britain, respectively.

The Angles (where we get the word English) were originally a Germanic tribe hailing from Denmark, and they inhabited the British Isles after the fall of the Roman Empire. The Saxons joined them later, and the Anglo-Saxon language later flourished, but it was not finished there.

FAMU band member says he was verbally harassed

Written on January 15, 2012 – 7:34 pm | by Christopher Tulloch

TALLAHASSEE — A Florida A&M band member says he was verbally harassed by another member for not joining a subgroup of the band’s trombone section known as “Thunder.”

That’s according to a letter obtained by the Tallahassee Democrat that was forwarded to trustees and university officials.

The letter was written by a band staff member and assistant professor to the music department. It says the trombone player said he was repeatedly subjected to verbal harassment and decided he needed to report the incidents “before the situation became violent.”

The newspaper reports that the student was encouraged to notify the FAMU police department and inquire about the need for a restraining order.

The report follows the death of drum major Robert Champion after a hazing ritual last November.
